Summary: The Four Books of Sentences by Peter Lombard are a compilation of biblical text, writings of the Church Fathers and of medieval thinkers on various theological topics. It became the standard theological textbook of the Late Middle Ages.

Signatures: a¹⁰ b⁶ c-z⁸ A-O⁸ P-Q⁶ R-S⁸ (t8, Q6 and S6 blank).
Illustrative and Decorative Content: Woodcut printer's device on Q5 verso. Rubricated at the beginning. Red and blue initials with continuous rubrication.
Binding: Contemporary Westphalian blind-tooled brown pigskin over wooden boards, sides with intersecting fillets, and rosette, fleur-de-lys and double-headed eagle stamps, yellow edges, (clasps removed).
Additional Details: [292] leaves including title and three original blanks. Several paper stocks including one from a Basel mill (bull's head surmounted by Greek tau watermark). Gothic type. Double column. 54 lines and headline. Early inscription on title "Ad bibliothecam Euliae Cholis Monsis." Lacking two blank pages (Q6 and S6). This book was acquired to celebrate the career and contributions of Dr. Philip Reynolds, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Medieval Christianity and Aquinas Professor of Historical Theology, on the occasion of his retirement, May 2021.
