The eagle is flanked by a pair of columns representing the Pillars of Hercules which are inscribed with Charles' motto, "Plus Ultra," translated as "Further Beyond." Additionally the coat of arms are surrounded by the inscription, "CA.V.RO.IMP.AVG./SOBRIE IVSTE ET PIE," translated as "Charles V Roman Emperor Augustus/Sensible Just and Pious."
