Glenn Independent Methodist (Heard County, Ga.)
The following history of Glenn Methodist was furnished by Carolyn Glover: 1825: It was established as a Methodist Episcopal Church South Mission, at Rock Springs, known today as Denver Community. To be supplied by a Methodist Circuit Rider who traveled by horseback from village to village, to serve Methodist Missions. Rock Springs was located in the Southwest corner of Heard County, Stateline District West Heard Mission. 1830: North Georgia Methodist Episcopal Church South Conference was organized from the South Carolina Methodist Episcopal Church South Conference which had supplied Georgia Methodist Churches with Ministers. 1833: The Annual Methodist Conference was held in LaGrange and continues to meet once a year. 1840: Mission Church was relocated 2.2 miles Southwest as Stateline Methodist Episcopal Church South, Brainion, .9 mile from the Alabama, Georgia State line. The Railroad was moving from Atlanta to Newnan, LaGrange, West Point, and Columbus, for growth and population change. 1850: Methodist Churches were served by Districts and Circuits- LaGrange, Hogansville, Columbus, Carrollton, Newnan, Whitesburg, and Mt. Zion has been under the LaGrange District for a major part of its existence. Conference records of pastors were not kept until 1852. There were 13 Baptist Churches and 10 Methodist Churches in Heard County at this time. Mt. Zion was among the first. Social life centered around the Church. 1870: Church was relocated 2 miles Southeast of Brainion to the present location. 1874: Property was deeded in 1874 by Mr. George W. Glenn to the Trustees of Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church South for building a church, cemetery, and academy. Church was held in a building on the property. The Trustees were as follows: George W. Glenn, Thomas Awbrey, John J. Turner, John Stewart, S. J. Evans, and William M. Garrett. Prior to 1894: Church burned and was rebuilt by church members, renamed Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church South, and has been maintained through the years and updated without hindering the original structure.
